Eyes are one of the most precious gifts bestowed upon us by mother nature, hence, they should be taken care of and maintained well. Here are a few tips to maintain a healthy eyesight:

1 . Eat Healthy Foods

-Nutritious and healthy food brings along healthy eyesight. Nutrients like omega 3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, vitamin C and vitamin E helps to ward off age-related vision problems like macular degeneration and cataracts.

-Include green leafy vegetables, salmon, tuna, eggs, nuts, beans, oranges and other citrus fruits in your daily diet. A glass of fresh carrot juice taken on a daily basis provides the much required Vitamin A which is needed to maintain eye health.

2 . Maintain Eye Hygiene

-It is very important to keep your eyes away from the unwanted dust and impurities as it can cause major infections and allergies in the eyes.

-Wash your hands properly after meals. Make sure you do not touch/ rub your eyes with dirty hands. If you wear contact lens, make sure you practice the basic hygiene instructions to avoid any complications.

3 . Try Basic Exercises

-The 6 muscles surrounding the eye can be trained for perfect vision. Practice some simple eye exercises on a regular basis to improve the health of the eyesight.

-Roll your eyes in a clockwise direction 5 times and then anti clockwise direction for 5 times. Repeat this 3 to 4 times, blinking your eyes in between each set. Concentrate your vision on a distant object and then immediately on a very close object. Do this 4 to 5 times.

4 . Blink More Often

-Blinking at frequent intervals is considered healthy for the eyesight. It helps to bring fresh tears to the corneal surface, which helps your eyes, stay moist and free of irritants.

-Blink your eyes 20 to 30 times rapidly and make sure you do not strain them at a stretch. It shall help you avert the chances of eye problems such as dry eyes and defects of vision such as myopia and hypermetropia.

5 . Give Rest To Your Eyes

-Staring at a computer or a phone screen for long can cause eye strain, blurry vision and dry eyes. Move the screen so that your eyes are at level with the top of the monitor. Use anti-glare screen if required.

-Give rest to your eyes every 20 minutes. Try the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes look away about 20 feet in front of you for about 20 seconds.

6 . Wear Your Sunglasses

Sunglasses are a great fashion accessory but their most important job is to protect your eyes from the sun’s ultra-violet rays.  When purchasing sunglasses, look for ones that block out 99% to 100% of both UV-A AND UV-B radiation.

7 . Quit Smoking

Studies have shown a strong link between smoking and the development of cataracts.  Smoking has been linked to an increased risk of developing age-related macular degeneration cataract and optic nerve damage, all of which can lead to blindness.

8 . Go For Regular Eye Examinations

You might think that your vision is fine or that your eyes are healthy, but visiting an eye professional is the only way to be really sure. Many diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic eye-disease and age-related macular degeneration often have no warning signs.

-Your eye specialist can help to decide whether your eyes are healthy or not and can suggest alternatives to it then.
